My name is Jeannette a.k.a. 'Jet' and I was born in Grand Canyon village in the Grand Canyon National Park. I have to distinguish the village from the Grand Canyon itself, people always ask "In the Grand Canyon?" No, or else I would be a "Supai" from the Havasupai Village at the bottom, lol! I am Native American from the Hopi tribe and my father is of the German and Swedish descent! I have a painting from my grandfather to "..and The Little Bahun-mana" which translates to the little white girl. I am one of the first-generation mixed bloods from Old Oraibi!
My Hopi name is "paayasnim" which translates to "standing in water" - named by my godmother, who is from the water clan, hence my water name. (This is goofy, as my hair should have been washed by my fathers' sisters, but since he wasn't Hopi, my grandfathers sisters washed my hair and gave me my name.) We are a matrilineal society, I derive my clan from my mother who is Masauu, or the coyote clan. We are the ones who are supposed to care for the spirits of those who passed on. I am from the village of Old Oraibi, the oldest continually inhabited village in North America!
I come from a family of artists. Most of my uncles are carvers (as are most Hopi men) of Katsina dolls, bows and arrows, etc. My grandfather (Gilbert Timeche) and great uncle (Bruce Timeche) are/were, respectively amazing painters. Both artists works can be seen in the famous El Tovar Hotel overlooking the Grand Canyon.
Here is a photo of me during Thanksgiving 2006 in San Juan Capistrano:
I am single again, after a hard & random break-up; however, I thank Ian so much for making JetsJewelry.com a reality. My kids are my niece Audrey and my nephew Andrew - "the Las Vegas kids" and all the rest of my cousins! I have always been the babysitter, maybe this is why I have no children of my own. I have 2 dogs named Chewy and Bailey...
I thank you for the opportunity to share my creations! As a Self-Representing Artist (SRA), I do all the creating, designing, marketing, photography, and web uploading so I appreciate your support!
Here is a photo of me fire polishing a bead so it is smooth, no bumps:
